or, The Whale Wedding: Flynn & Jeff

It’s always fun to be the first at something. When Flynn and Jeff contacted me about the would-be very first or, The Whale Wedding I was pumped! A rooftop ceremony, meticulously planned and prepared foods from a dope chef, a SUPER laid back and rad couple, what could be better? These two did not disappoint. I loved every moment of their special day. Take a peek at what I mean!

From Flynn, the Event-Planning, Event Designing Bride:

What was your inspiration behind your wedding day?
I wanted our wedding to feel like us, plan and simple, with the vibe of a destination wedding. I wanted the whole weekend to be full of events and gatherings so people could socialize the whole time. As for the wedding, I didn’t want the traditional wedding, no seating arrangements, no cake cutting, no announcement of the wedding party, I really wanted a party for everyone in our lives to interact and be together. The main reason for not having seating arrangements or a sit down dinner was because I feel like time is wasted and lost doing that, people are adults, if you put food out they will come.

The best thing someone told me about planning a wedding was that “its the only time in your life, besides your funeral, when all the people you love and care about all show up in one place for both of you.” I wanted to make sure that all those people from Pittsburgh to college to Los Angeles all had a chance to gather and get to know one another.

Advice to share with brides planning now?
Pay attention to whats important for you and the groom. We each made a list of the top 5 most important things for that day and then prioritized achieving both of those lists. For Jeff it was important that we be close to his friends and family so they could all make the travel and be there. For me, it was all about the quality of food and drink as well as the photos (I’m looking at you Steven ;-). When you focus your goals its a lot easier to say “we can save money here because its not the top of the lists”.

How did you and your spouse meet?
Jeff and I met through a pair of siblings in college, we both attending schools in Boston (hence the New England restaurant choice). I was friends with the younger sister Courtney (my matron of honor) and Jeff was friends with the older brother Kyle. Courtney took me to a party out at her brothers college and I like to point out, I noticed him first. We hung out off and on for about two years before Jeff showed up at my 21st birthday party and the rest was a hot mess… to this day really.

Proposal Details! How did it happen? 🙂
It was on my 28th birthday (catching the theme yet), Jeff asked if I wanted to take Lenka (our husky) for a walk on the beach and then get lunch at my favorite ocean side spot. I was rocking my brand new custom Steelers sweatshirt my sister made me as a bday gift, only a true yinzer gets proposed to in their black n’ gold. Halfway through our walk Jeff got down on one knee and said the sweetest words, I won’t share them because I like to keep that moment private for us. I obviously said yes and then after the shock wore off we realized someone should take our photo, however, the closest person was a shirtless 60+ year old man running on the beach so we waited for the next person, and then we headed to brunch and Costco, it was seriously the most domesticated thing we could have done.

What was your favorite memory from your big day?
I would have to say it was after the ceremony when we went to take photos with Steven in or, the Whale. I made a point of giving us the time to actually eat and enjoy a drink together before heading to cocktail hour with all our guests. It was really important to me to take a moment to just do what we normally would do on a date; sit at a restaurant bar ordering fun drinks and snacking on appetizers, I loved that we could make it an opportunity for Steven to capture photos of us. Also, Or, the Whale is such beautiful location and their food is magical so its not like the time would be wasted ha!
